Benchmark Genetics announced a new strategic partnership with the University of Chile.

The partnership was announced during the ISGA XIV conference in Puerto Varas, Chile on Dec. 2, 2022. The goal is to develop new research and development projects on genetics and biotechnology solutions that could “tackle sustainability challenges in the aquaculture industry,” according to a company press release.

Some topics of focus include:improving selection for resistance to key disease threats to the Chilean salmon industry, improving the definition of resistance phenotypes, and harnessing the latest genomic and gene editing technologies.

“This partnership further underlines Benchmark Genetics’ commitment to the Chilean aquaculture industry, with the expectation that outputs from the research will be rapidly translated into practice to provide further improvements to the performance of our lines in Chilean production systems,” said Dr. Ross Houston, director of innovations at Benchmark.
